This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students represent those fresh out of elementary and those about to enter high school. With this sixth grade/eighth grade split, my student representation is challenging and creates a plethora of opportunity for self reflection and growth. The sixth graders are feeling the freedom that comes with being unleashed from the elementary boundaries and recognizing that freedom carries responsibility. My eighth graders are welcoming more independence but will find out later (maybe after Christmas) that high school looms. Fun Year Ahead!!
My Project
These books will make a difference in the reading lives of middle school students in that they allow the student to have a free choice of reading beyond their text book. Middle school students (especially struggling readers) tend to become frustrated with Poetry; therefore, I chose this genre in order for them to have the exposure needed to excel.
As an advocate of reading the written words, in addition to screen time, these materials encourage students to delve into their own creative thinking and writing styles.
I am building a reading area and a library to model what a safe reading and writing environment looks like.
