Did you grow up having family game night? We need some fun games to learn new skills.
My students come from a tough neighborhood in NYC and often do not have experiences playing board games at home.
They have various and multiple special needs and have a very difficult time learning basic skills. They struggle every day trying to communicate their wants and needs. I am a Speech-Language Pathologist and from my experience, these kids would benefit from having simple games to learn turn taking skills, and learn to have fun in age appropriate way. Having games available in the classroom will improve my students' abilities to engage with each other in positive and appropriate ways.
I am requesting some basic turn taking games that will help my severely cognitively impaired students partake in activities that are typical for kids their age. I plan to initiate a buddy system to have students from different classes and with different abilities work together to improve their social skills and learn from each other. It is my hope that they can learn compassion and make new friends which is so hard to do in a special-education school with self-contained classes. It is important for my students to learn to interact with different types of people through socially positive experiences.
My students rarely have what you or I would consider "normal" social experiences.
I hope with the availability of these games, my students will learn to engage in socially appropriate activities and be able to transfer these new skills to other environments.
