This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

“Art is a nation’s most precious heritage. For it is in our works of art that we reveal to ourselves and to others the inner vision which guides us as a nation. And where there is no vision, the people perish.” â€"Lyndon Johnson. Allowing students to find their vision through art is my daily goal.

I teach at an under-served middle school in Southern California.

Most of my students are considered "at-risk" and all of them qualify for the free Federal lunch program. Students will tell me that they love their neighborhood and where they are from, despite the gangs, tagging, and violence that sometimes goes on there. The irony of this is that these same neighborhoods are in the backyard of the entertainment capital of the world. The entertainment industry contributes over $16 billion to the State of California's economy. My students have the potential to be a part of this booming industry. When they learn these facts for the first time, you can see their imaginations begin to spin, as they dream about the possibilities and future that could await them. My students are motivated, intelligent, and inspire me every day with their resilience. All they need are the right tools to help them explore their creative sides and possibly learn some new technology while their at it.

My Project

I am requesting seven small camcorders for students to create and record short film projects in my Theatre Arts classrooms. This will give them an opportunity to explore another creative channel for themselves, either by writing the script, acting in the scenes, directing other students or using editing software to create their own films. It will also give them an opportunity to compete with other middle schools in the district that put on a yearly film festival. This opportunity may be the key that gets a kid who is not so interested in education the motivation they need to stay in school. The high school next door to our middle school has a fifty percent drop out rate. Many times students drop out because they feel their education is irrelevant compared to the daily distractions that surround them. Giving them an opportunity to create through filmmaking may be the way to prevent some of these students from becoming one more statistic.

Giving students small camcorders will have a major impact on my Theatre Arts students.

It will allow them to dive into a creative field that could possibly lead to a future career in the entertainment industry. It will also allow them to take their productions to a middle school film festival and become acquainted with other young film makers. It could also possibly prevent students from dropping out of school. Please help us express our own artistic inner vision.
