My Students
Our NYC public school has been closed since mid-March. Teaching first graders remotely is challenging, since six and seven year olds need hands-on experiences. My students love learning, but staying engaged while staring at a screen day-after-day is no easy task for them.
Trying to recreate a classroom for my eager to learn young students from a dining room table with a laptop, and very limited resources is difficult.
Having materials to model my lessons with would certainly have an impact on their grasp of new concepts.
My Project
My first graders love learning, but it is hard for young minds to grasp new concepts without being able to see and touch. Learning science and math from my dining room table with a laptop and some books is difficult for young minds. With science materials, my students will able to continue learning about science not just from reading about it and looking at pictures, but observing real butterflies develop from larvae on a daily basis. With math tools I can model abstract ideas, that will help my students build the mental images they need to comprehend place value and fractions.
