My Students

I work in a caring, diverse, Title I public school in Columbia, Maryland. As a school, we work every day to develop human beings who are ready both academically and emotionally to be productive and contributing members of society.

My students are rich in experiences and personalities; they surprise me on a daily basis with their eagerness to learn new things and teach me new things from their lives.

They are sponges ready to take on new experiences, but often come from families who cannot financially afford them without help. One of the experiences I want to give my students is the opportunity to learn a new instrument.

Learning an instrument not only develops and reinforces important cognitive skills, but it also teaches them to have discipline, develops social skills, and is an opportunity to develop positive self esteem from accomplishment. These skills will take my students far beyond their school years, and they align with our school drive to prepare students in the best way possible for life beyond our doors.

My Project

My students are constantly asking me to learn a new instrument. If they see something in my classroom that they have not played yet, they want to learn. If they find a YouTube video of someone accompanying a popular song with piano, they come in asking to learn piano. I want to be able to give them the opportunity to learn a string instrument without the prohibitive rental fees that come in a traditional school orchestra program.

My students had a brief experience with borrowed ukuleles last year, and they were so engaged that they progressed through curricular standards faster than I had seen before.

They were excited to learn a new instrument, and I was able to channel that excitement to motivate them to learn music curricular standards. In addition to the music learning, the class worked on social skills as they worked together in an ensemble, and developed perseverance as they hit harder skills to master. Having a set of ukuleles all year would mean deeper musical understanding and harder work ethic, which is something I am constantly working to develop in our young minds.
