Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our small school is located in New York. We are housed within a campus of many small schools. As we service students primarily from the surrounding neighborhood, our students represent a multicultural, diverse and disadvantaged urban population.
Biotechnology appeals to these students because it provides many hands-on experiences.
As they progress through the course, students learn how to apply their knowledge to real-world situations. They also develop critical thinking and analytical skills.
All of these life skills will serve our students well in college. Biotechnology may also open the door on career opportunities beyond college.
Biotechnology is an ever-growing field, but unfortunately, it's very expensive. We were granted a complete biotechnology lab through very generous donations from DonorsChoose several years ago, but the chemical reagents must be purchased every year to provide the incoming students with the same experiences and to maintain the program.
My Project
In order to continue providing my students with biotechnology experiences, we need to have the GelGreen DNA stain to make the DNA bands on our gels visible under UV light. The GelGreen stain is safe for the environment and for student use and is much more sensitive than the blue stain that most kits supply.
We have been studying about the PTC gene and GMO's. In the past, our students were not able to see their DNA on the gels because of the stain we were using. I want my students to have a positive and long lasting experience with these labs.
