I teach in a middle school with a fast-growing population. The culture of the school continues to shift, but the diversity only adds to the school and makes it that much better! Many students have opportunities to grow their learning if only we give them the best resources that we can provide. But funding is low. It can be challenging to meet the very different needs of all students, but we make it work.
My school has a supportive environment for creativity, especially if it promotes learning and will engage kids.
However, there isn't a strong culture of reading, especially reading for fun or pleasure at my school. That has to change!
In short, my school is facing changes, but we are embracing those changes and trying to engage the community that we serve in order to best meet the diverse needs of our students. We are a family; we are passionate about our students and about learning. We have a journey ahead of us, but I believe that we will rise to the occasion.
My Project
These books will grow the literary nonfiction section of our classroom library, and will be used heavily during our literary nonfiction book club unit in the spring. Students will read the literary nonfiction texts during the unit and then choose one of the topics that they discover during their reading to research further in the form of a project.
Students will pair up to read books together, sharing the experience of learning and understanding.
As these books are nonfiction, students will gain insight into how others live, problems that our world is facing, and how they can be a part of the change they hope to see. I am so excited for my students to experience these titles and our great unit!
