My Students
In an effort to help our students gain a competitive edge in the academic world, we have recently begun our journey to become a PYP (Primary Years Programme) school. This will help the teachers focus more on providing an education with depth so that our students will be able to learn skills that will put them on the same playing field as students with greater financial resources.
My fifth grade students attend their neighborhood school where many of them receive free lunch and come from families that speak a language other than English.
Our school qualifies for Title I funding, and about 35% of our students receive English as a second language instruction. We have dedicated families that struggle to support their students due to the need to work multiple jobs and/or a language barrier.
My Project
Next year I would like to move to flexible seating in the classroom. This year I tried to offer a few options and noticed those kids that were able to self select a learning environment were more focused and more productive. As I move away from the classic student desk, my students will still need a place to keep and organize their school supplies. I have been reading multiple articles about students needing to be comfortable while they learn. For many students this eliminates the idea of traditional desks and chairs, but if you take away the desks you must have another way to organize school supplies.
Providing a storage crate for each students will allow my students to keep their learning tools organized and ready to go.
We will call them lockers to help my students anticipate the changes they will encounter as they head off to middle school and learn how to predict which supplies they might need for different times of the day.
