Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We need to start teaching the kids of the 21st century. About 6 years ago I went to a training where the instructor said that we were fully equipped to teach the students of 1956! That resonated with me and therefore, I strive to update my teaching strategies for my students. I am teaching a class of 25 English Language learners. I teach in an inner city school where 99 percent of our population is Hispanic. Most of the students are well versed in using technology at home to play video games and activities already. I want to take advantage of those skills and redirect their use of technology to become productive and excited learners.
My Project
Having 2 chromebooks in the class will help in accommodating more students into learning and using technology with a purpose. With the funds that are available to our school, the purchase of technology is still not on the forefront of our immediate needs. Very slowly our school has purchased more technology but it is still not meeting the learning needs of our students. We are fortunate to have a working computer in our class and that's it! I have bought 2 chromebooks on my own and I also received one as a gift for Christmas from my husband. Having that additional technology has made a world of difference in differentiating instruction for my students while helping them become well versed in the use of technology. This year we also started learning academies where we group all of the Kindergarteners at their academic level and go to a specific class for leveled instruction. I am piloting a computer Language Arts, Math and Science program that our school will purchase next year. Because I had some of the devices in place, I was able to implement it almost fully. The students working on the devices I had available, were benefiting from instruction at their academic level; truly in an independent way. They learned how to work through their levels for the period and quietly tapped the next student on the shoulder when their time was up. Having them fully learning and engaged allowed me to work with other students in small group instruction. It was wonderful to have that opportunity for technology. However, because there were only 4 devices, 2 students from a group would always have to wait. Therefore, each group had to have a turn every other day, which to me slowed the learning process.
