My students need tickets to the World Maker Faire in our home city to inspire their inner inventors, makers, and scientists.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Growing up, Mr. Wizard and the omnipresent kids on his show inspired me daily. I remember trying to fold a piece of paper more than a dozen times, swallowing water hanging upside down off my bed, and moving my mom's poor houseplant around to see if it would follow the sun, just like on the show.
I wanted to do science just like those kids on TV.
Today, I'm still a kid at heart trying to do the latest and neatest stuff, but as a teacher and a dad, I get more excited when my kids catch the excitement. Mr. Wizard is no longer on the air, but we're in a golden age for at-home science and inventors thanks to the Internet and the Maker movement, especially institutions like Make: Magazine and the New York Hall of Science.
The main event for all of this is at the World Maker Faire here in New York City where inspiration is on display everywhere. From robots you can build yourself and inventors harnessing electricity from houseplants, to metalworking musicians, I know going to this once-a-year showcase with my students will inspire them for a long time to come.
My Project
My students deserve to catch an infectious love of trying out and getting inspired by the latest in science and technology. You see, they themselves are inspirational to me. They've traveled a world away from their home countries to immigrate here to the United States. At my school, they work all day in English, a second language. They work their hardest to get the greatest education in the world so they can pursue their dreams to their fullest. I want to inspire them to embrace their creativity and not to feel limited by circumstance or resources.
By interacting with the hundreds of exhibitors who are using the latest do-it-yourself technology, I hope they will be inspired to make amazing things in and out of my classroom. Going to the Maker Faire will open a world of opportunity to my students. For one, with so many diverse exhibits and attractions, they will see how their new home, New York, truly is a center of the universe.
Most importantly, my students will interact with others, practicing their English and learning how real people are doing amazing science every day.
They will see science as a creative enterprise they can be part of. Just seeing that opportunity exists is half the battle for many kids. Tickets to this fair, held right in their backyard, are out of reach unless someone amazing like you donates. Please help inspire my students to be even more than they thought they could be by sending us to Maker Faire.
