We Need These Books!

My students need 2-6 copies of 12 current, enticing, award-winning novels.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Thiel's classroom raised $547

This project is fully funded

My students have been begging me to provide them with the books they want to read. I teach Language Arts to 7th graders at a high-poverty school. One of my top priorities is to get all my kids to love reading, and this can be tough when they don't have access to fresh, current literature at school.

Our school recently grew from a K-5 into a K-8, and it has been a challenge to accumulate needed resources for grades 6-8, especially novels. Many of the books we do have are old, out-of date, and beat up.

I want to get my students excited about reading by providing them with new, award-winning, enticing novels. The titles I have selected include books that kids have been begging me to get, as well as all of the nominees for the 2010 Young Readers Choice Award for grades 7-9. They will be able to read the nominated books, and then vote to help decide which book actually receives the Young Readers Choice Award in 2010. All of the books will be part of students' literature curriculum, either as the focus of literature circle discussions, or as an individual novel study. Students will all be paired with books that fit their interest and reading level. As they read, they will refine their reading skills, increase their vocabulary, and deepen their understanding of current issues.

With your support, my students will immerse themselves in the best, most current young adult literature I can find. They can't wait to get their hands on these books, and to dive into a rich and rewarding reading experience.
