Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are energetic and outgoing 6th graders. Ethnically our school is about 55% Latino, 20% African-American, 10% Asian, and 5% White. About 50% of my students are English Language Learners of varying abilities, and the rest are native English speakers. They attend a Title I, inner-city school in a community oriented neighborhood. My students and their families enjoy participating in school sponsored events.

My students desire to be challenged academically and grow as critical thinkers.

In spite of the economic disparities and other difficulties my students face, I believe that they all can achieve greatness.

My Project

I want my students to enjoy writing, and not see it as a tedious task. By having a variety of pens, markers, and pencils available to my students they will have the opportunity to choose which implement flows for them, as well as make color options as they build their writing skills. Students will also have the option to color code their writing during the revising and editing stages. Clipboards will give my students options on where they want to sit during their wiring time, as well as flexibility when meeting with and getting feedback from their writing partner. Chart paper will help us make anchor charts that will be readily accessible and used as writing references throughout the year.

With the help of these writing materials my students will become more confident writers, increase their communication skills, and have opportunities for self expression.

It is important for my students to have access to tools that speak to their different learning styles. While tackling writing in a variety of genres, my sixth graders will use these materials to spark their creativity as they move through the writing process.
