My Kindergarten students choose to be leaders and goal getters. They are constantly reminding and encouraging each other that they might not be able to do something "yet", but to keep trying! We have large class sizes so I differentiate instruction to best meet the individual needs academically, socially, and behaviorally.
My students beg to write in their journals each day!
Yes, I said Kindergarteners! They love getting their journals and writing about their life and experiences. The Kinderwriting curriculum by Tara West has allowed me to cater to each student.
They LOVE listening to read alouds, sharing their journal entries with buddies, and doing hands on activities.
My Project
I used the curriculum Kinderwriting by Tara West (TPT) this year and I saw a huge growth in my students. There are 9 units and she suggests 3-4 books per unit. Some of the books she listed I already had!!! A few I borrowed, but others were only available on Amazon. I noticed a huge difference on the days I was able to teach or introduce a new skill with the suggested book. The kids loved the story and had something to connect to as they were writing.
These books have been purposefully selected to introduce Kindergarteners various types of writing.
My students will begin by learning to illustrate a story with pictures which is when I will read "Not a Box". They learn through that text a simple square can turn into any illustration by using simple shapes. We will continue to grow with each unit until the end of kindergarten when we are writing multiple sentences about researched animals and using texts such as "Are You a Bee?" and "Cats vs. Dogs".
Please consider donating to help our class grow as writers!
