My favorite quote that I learned from one of my professors is, "It's more than just Drums". It relates to this project because by teaching my students through percussion I teach them how to apply what they have learned to everyday life skills, and transfer those skills to their courses.
These kids come to school wanting to better themselves and make better of the situation they have been dealt.
School is a place to get away from what has been troubling them in their personal life, but the band room and band practice is their safe heaven, an outlet for them to take their problems in a safe creative and musical way. The band program is a place where these students can be in a safe environment after school where the can learn to be musically enhanced and earn collegiate scholarships to further their learning education which is the goal of our program.
My Project
I am asking for new sticks, mallets, angle bars, and leg rest for my students so they can perform for this year and many years to come. Without these tools my students will not be able to carry the beat needed to fuel this band program. With these resources my students will be able to learn self-discipline, self-respect, teamwork, accountability the basic fundamentals of marching percussion, how to properly hold sticks, rhythm, and tempo, how to read and play music, marking time, playing together, and sounding like a unit. Through learning the different aspects of music and marching, they would be able to perform as percussion section for parades, competitions, halftime shows, and school events.
The overall main goal is to provide these students scholarships to help with the advancement of their education while in college.
This program has been able to send many students off who are academically and musically well rounded and we would like to continue this with you help.
