This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have such a great group of kids in my room. They love their school and really want to be good students. Many of them come from very difficult home situations.
My students are sweet and capable.
Most of them live in poverty, and we are a 99% free and reduced lunch school. Our school does its best to stretch our resources and provide these students with the needs they have, inside and outside of the classroom, but when our school is located in a high poverty area, the resources only stretch so far. Our students never complain about their circumstances or if our classroom is left uncleaned, but they deserve more.
I believe they need to see our classroom at its best, so they can achieve their best.
My Project
My school gets lots of donations from churches and organizations for school supplies, like crayons, scissors, etc. Thankfully we've been able to make those last the first half of the year and have plenty to replenish our supply buckets.
However, we are short handed, and are often in need of the sanitary basics to keep our classroom clean, healthy, and supplied with the basic office supplies!
We need to be able to mop and vacuum our floor, in which the students will be involved and learn responsibility. I believe when a child takes ownership of their classroom, they appreciate it more.
We constantly need paper. We've gone through the one box we were provided and the money is coming out of my pocket now. In order for students to get small group reading time, I have been printing books for them from Reading A-Z, in order to get the most out of our time together. Students can also take the books home and keep them in their book bins for Read to Self time. I have to staple these books as well! Our school doesn't supply us with those basic needs. Other supplies we go through are tape and dry erase markers. Students get the opportunity to use dry erase markers as an alternative to using up paper. We seem to go through a box a week!
We still have 17 weeks left and are at the end of the supplies we need to keep our learning environment running!
