I teach in a self-contained autism classroom. My students are in my classroom all day. My students have needs in the areas of academic skills, communication, fine and gross motor, functional and social/emotional skills.
Despite the challenges that my students face, they are incredibly resilient.
Their vivacious personalities, zest for life, and boldness are a huge part of our school culture. They do not let developmental delays or poverty get in the way of their learning.
Our school is a culturally diverse school in St. Paul, Minnesota. Our school serves over 600 students in grades pre-kindergarten through grade 5. We have a Language Academy (LA) program, which is designed for new immigrant students, some of whom may have limited or interrupted formal education.
96.5% of our students are students of color, 88.4% of our students qualify for free/reduced-price lunch, 13.5% of our students receive special education services, and 58.2% of our students are English language learners.
Our school provides students with rigorous academics, featuring vocal and instrumental music education, while building family and community partnerships in a welcoming environment that together will inspire future leaders.
My Project
Laminating pouches, card stock, and Velcro are materials that are needed daily in my classroom. While these materials might not be the most fun or glamours teaching materials, they are needed. Classroom basics are so important in the classroom. When teaching children with complex needs, we need to get creative.
Our basic supplies are running low, and we need them to learn effectively!
We are asking for Velcro, card stock and lamination pouches to keep our classroom running. These supplies help us differentiate instruction, stay engaged, create activities, and learn our best. In a special education classroom, I must laminate every activity and hands-on manipulative I make so that it can last. My students tend to bend items and put them in their mouths, and lamination helps lengthen the use of these materials. Many of my students require very hands-on tasks to stay engaged. I use Velcro to create sorting and matching activities to keep their hands busy without losing the pieces. Without these essentials, our classroom would literally stop moving! We need these supplies to make it through the end of the school year without teachers paying out of their pockets.
