I am a first-year special education teacher at a priority school in SW DC. Our school has been labeled as a "40-40" school meaning that we are among the lowest-performing schools in DCPS.
100% of our kiddos receive free and reduced lunch.
Our school population also has a high number of special education students. In my room, I have a variety of learners, including students with ADHD, speech impediments, learning disorders and emotional disturbance.
With your help, we can create a loving, warm learning environment for my Pre-school to 2nd graders where they have access to all the materials they need to learn!
Because our school is a blended learning school and our district requires students to be on technology two hours a week -- BUT, we have no technology in our classroom. Our school does not have the funding to supply teacher or student laptops.
As part of our literacy and math curriculum, my kiddos should be spending 30 minutes each day on technology in tailored intervention apps (such as Lexia and iReady.) However, we are currently unable to do this.
Having two Chromebooks in our room will help students to learn technology and computer skills at a young age while also solidifying literacy and math skills using the programs our district pays for.
