Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are bold and beautiful and born and raised in a community that is full of love and pride. Being freshman and sophomores in the school, they pride themselves in being leaders who want to support the younger students to grow into bright and strong ladies and gentlemen. They are bright, charismatic, and caring students.

While they are resilient, a lot of them have not been explicitly taught how to balance the rigor of academic life, mindfulness skills, and social justice.

The reality is many of them have experienced trauma that affects their ability to concentrate on their coursework. The transition to distance learning and now to in-person learning has been especially tolling on the students' (and teachers') minds and bodies, but we all want to make it work for the safety of our communities.

My Project

My students are still re-adjusting to in-person learning from more than a year in online learning, and one of the skills we are relearning is how to engage with texts and books rather than the computer screen. While technology is important at times, we want to be able to read and skillfully annotate and critically analyze a text without the use of a computer and its advanced software.

Some reading tools that we can use to become stronger readers are highlighters, colored pens, post-its, and bookmarks!

These tools provide an opportunity for the students to engage with the words and the ideas in different ways that may help them to remember the material or spark new ideas. Highlighters can be used to emphasize new vocabulary and post-its can be used to write notes about characters they connect with. Studies show that people often remember more things when they use traditional paper and pen over a computer screen.
