My Project

I have students come to my classroom for SEL/leadership class each week. Grades K-5 spend class time in my room playing and working in centers. We have creative projects that require teamwork and we have sensory areas and a small library with books and puzzles where they can work alone or alongside others. We have a classroom bunny who they also share time with. Our rules are simple...be kind and respectful to each other, the bunny, and the things in the room we use. They are allowed to visit with their friends but voice levels should be low. They are also expected to clean up after they have used something. Each class earns points for how many are able to go to the treasure area. Points are determined by the rules followed and how they leave the centers after clean-up time. There can be as few as 0 names or as many as 8 called. Names are called randomly. We also celebrate our classmates who get to visit the treasure area even when their names are not called that week. They know everyone will eventually get to go, but it is important to be happy for others too. With about 100 students coming through my room each week and as many as 32 names being called on any given week it can become costly to keep the treasure area filled with fun and interesting treasure booty. I have always paid for this out of my own pocket. This year I am asking for help to do this. My students really look forward to this time as do I not just because they get something but because it is really wonderful to see how much they celebrate each other even when their names are not called.
