Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember how hard it was learning to read? How about learning the alphabet? I know it was a long time ago but my struggling kindergarten students need all the help they can get. That is why I am incorporating it directly into art class!
I am the art specialist in a kindergarten through fifth grade arts school.
We are located in one of the poorest rural areas of the state. Our families are plagued by poverty and high unemployment rates. I see about 975 students every week, from kindergarten though grade five. All of the students receive free or reduced priced lunch. The student population is 95% Hispanic, 3% African American, 1% Caucasian, and 1% Asian. About 70% of the students in my room are learning English as a second language.
My Project
I have requested Uppercase Alphabet & Number Dough Stampers, Rubbing Crayons, Build-A-Kid Sponge Painters, My First Magnetic Picture Maker, and many other engaging items. The activities in these rich theme-based resources develop phonemic awareness, rhyming, identity, categorization, blending, addition, and substitution, all while creating unique artwork! The materials would assist me, the art teacher, to help the general education classroom teacher in laying the foundation for reading success!
Using these literacy resources in my art classroom will most definitely increase my students' academic achievement. They will improve their literacy skills and be on their way to becoming high achieving readers and writers all while having fun!
