This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world," Nelson Mandela said, and those are words I want my students to live by.

I teach twenty-five kindergarten students who hail from a high-poverty and high-crime neighborhood.

In an area where gang violence is prevalent, even our youngest students are aware of the dangers they are exposed to. Despite the obstacles they face, I am committed to making our classroom their safe-haven. However, it is difficult to create a welcoming environment for my students with limited resources. No matter how much I try, our classroom is pretty much bare!

My Project

I am requesting big books, as well as paperback books, WhisperPhones, and art materials that will supplement our curriculum especially during small group instruction. The big books will allow me to model how good readers should read, without the constant interruption from students who "can't see the picture." With WhisperPhones, my students will be able to hear themselves better as they read without disturbing the rest of the class. The labels and birthday chart will provide my students with visual cues/stimuli necessary to keep five and six year olds focused during our seven hour school day. And the art materials (nuudles and foam) will provide my students with more hands-on activities throughout the day.

As my students master the tasks we are working on now, they will become bored and I am afraid that they will lose interest due to lack of resources in our class.

I am hoping these items will help make activities more enjoyable for my students, thereby fostering a love for learning despite the many challenges my students face.
