This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
At the end of the last school year, we were all hunkered down in our individual homes, trying to process all the changes in our lives. I was in daily contact with 30 of my 150 students. We communicated daily, but it was a huge challenge. Many of my students didn't have access to technology and so things were not equitable.
These kids are now back in school and learning in a new normal that requires them to wear masks and stay 6 feet apart at all times.
Many of my students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with limited resources available. I want to help alleviate this.
Our school, built in 1965, is a Title I school in Nevada, serving 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students with 100% participation in the free breakfast and lunch program.
Students are grouped in teams to build relationships with faculty, staff, and peers. This allows them to keep the same core set of teachers who will stay with them for their entire middle school journey. Team Texas is home to a diverse group of young people all striving to do the best they can with the materials they are
My Project
I am currently teaching science using a hybrid model for most of my 7th and 8th graders. A lot of the assignments that the students are required to complete are being done on the computer. I have currently been writing projects to get a classroom set of laptops for my students to use. One of the questions I am frequently asked when I do provide a student with a laptop to use is: "Can I have a mouse to use with this?"
Having a mouse and mouse pad will allow for more academic teaching instead of the student concentrating on how to use the mouse pad on the laptop.
To ensure that these mice will last longer, I would like each laptop to be equipped with a mouse pad to go with it. This will ensure that the mice moving on the table tops will move quietly and smoothly and not disrupt the students sitting around them. Since I often have students looking at videos independently in class, I want to be able to supply earbuds for those students that don't have their own to use. I can place them in an envelope with that student's name on it so that they can use it every time without having to worry about sharing.
