My Students
I teach an extremely talented and unique group of fifth graders in Kentucky. They are both advanced program students and regular program students. Several of my students are from different countries.
We are considered a school with moderate poverty, but we do not qualify for additional state and government funds.
Each of our at-risk students needs the opportunity to have the same resources as students at other schools. My students are eager and excited. They are creative and want to learn more. They are eager and seek knowledge on a daily basis.
My Project
I want to give my students the opportunity to learn about United States history through media literacy. This amazing weekly newspaper, USA Studies Weekly, chronicles our history from Ancient America to the Reconstruction. My students will have the opportunity to have their very own newspaper each and every week during the year. They will read the topic of the week, answer questions related to the news articles as well as a crossword puzzle. Just like our real, hometown newspaper.
Students will see that the 'real news' comes in various forms other than the internet and textbooks.
My students will be reading nonfiction which will allow them to become more literate in print media. If funded, my students will be exposed to other types of print resources beyond fiction.
