My students need a library of quality nonfiction literature for independent reading and reading groups. They need literature that will make them want to pick up a book and read it.

My Students
Do you remember when you were a kid and you could never find a book that was interesting to you? This happens everyday in my classroom. My students need books that help them become better readers and books that they enjoy and don't want to put down.
My students come from poverty stricken homes and most have experienced more failures than successes.
My classroom is a second grade, integrated room in New York. A lot of my students come from broken homes or live with other relatives. I have 6 special education students in my room that need more support. It is up to the teachers in our school to get the students on the right path in life and to show them what they are capable of. I want to be able to provide the fun and interactive learning that they deserve.
My Project
Where do I begin? Books are where students get most of their information. My district is moving to the Common Core Standards which requires a lot of nonfiction texts. My school does not have the funding to buy all of the books that every classroom needs and deserves. These books will be used for independent reading, reading groups and in reading bags that go home for homework. The students will learn about real life experiences and concepts through their reading. These high interest nonfiction books will help my students reading comprehension and will make them be REAL READERS! Reading and rereading stories is what will increase a students reading level. I need to help my students learn how to love reading.
These books will be used for all subject areas and will really show my students how the world is connected.
I teach 2nd grade and at the start of the year my students come to me reading at a beginning 1st grade reading level.
I am a dedicated teacher that tries my hardest to get my students to where they need to be and to open the window to the future that they deserve. Please help me in achieving this goal!
