I teach at a large inner city school with a largely Hispanic population and high poverty rate. 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. My students not only struggle with economic hardships, they struggle with learning a new language and fitting into a new culture.
Despite these challenges, my orchestra students come in every class period excited to play their instruments, and excited to learn different types of music from all over the world.
They are given the opportunity to learn a new instrument, work together as a team, and perform for an audience, and they rise to the challenge!
My Project
My orchestra students work very hard to make beautiful music on their violins, violas, and cellos. Some students are using bows that are really old and need replaced, and some students are using bows that are too small due to our lack of funds for replacement bows. Bows that are really old do not grip the strings and therefore do not make a good sound.
Bows that are in good condition and the correct size make a big difference in the quality of sound the students can make on their instruments.
Please help us acquire new bows so the students can achieve success, feel more confident in their playing, and make beautiful music. Thank you!
