Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The last school year was so challenging for all our students. We operated on a hybrid model where the students only attended school every other day and were required to complete schoolwork at home on their "beyond the building" day. Some students were completely distance learning. Everyone struggled with this.

These kids are now back in school and learning in a new normal that requires them to wear masks at all times inside the building.

Many of my students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with limited resources available. I want to help alleviate this. Our school, built in 1965, is a Title I school in Nevada, serving 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade students with 100% participation in the free breakfast and lunch program. Students are grouped in teams to build relationships with faculty, staff, and peers. This allows them to keep the same core set of teachers who will stay with them for their entire middle school journey. Team Texas is home to a diverse group of young people all striving to do the best they can with the materials they have.

My Project

I teach science to all grade levels in our middle school. I am constantly having to go to the other teachers to ask to borrow textbooks for Planetary Science since the version I currently have in class is outdated and missing information found in the newer version. I also am missing about half of the textbooks anyway due to damage and the fact they went walking at some point in the last 10 years. Students are also starting to come back to school after missing out of so much for the last year and a half. These books would also be able to be given out for students who are excluded due to COVID and who don't have access to technology at home. We use the textbooks all the time to complete activities, and my students are very aware that these textbooks are old and somewhat outdated.

The look on my students' faces when presented with brand new materials to use for class shows that they know I care about them and want them to have the best materials to use.

We use the science text book to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of using different mediums (e.g., print or digital text, video, multimedia) to present a particular topic or idea. ELA RI 8.7. The students are also required to write scientific explanations and will use the text to delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, assessing whether the reasoning is sound and the evidence is relevant and sufficient; recognize when irrelevant evidence is introduced. ELA RI 8.8
