This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We have roughly 475 students in grades 3-5, including 3 special needs classes that all come to the library each week. Roughly 83% of our students come from poverty. School is a safe, loving place for them.
I have been able to create relationships with most all of our students.
Before I get to the library door in the morning, I am bombarded with students wanting to tell me something, help me take my things, or just hug me. Each know that I care about him or her.
Having new chairs would make the children feel important. They like having new things. Many of them come from homes where they don't often get new things. They also don't have much experience outside of our small town. I would like to show them how big our world is and how others do care.
My Project
This is one part of a larger project. Since I need 30 chairs, I will have to create a few more projects like this. Our children do collaborative work and centers at the tables and chairs.
New chairs would not only look nice, but offer more comfort and support to our children.
They also would not be able to tip these back like the old ones.
When I took this job last year, I promised that I would create an inviting, beautiful space where children feel special, loved and accepted.
I have tried to create an attractive setting with decorative bulletin boards, wall art, and displays, but our furniture is very outdated. It's one of the first things I noticed when I first saw the library. I would like to request new chairs for our classroom area. The current chairs are uncomfortable and outdated-at least 40 years old. I would like to have updated chairs so that our children can sit comfortably and work.
Our teachers and parents would also benefit as the library is used as meeting spaces for both faculty and parent nights.
