My Students
My students are a diverse group of learners with a variety of needs. They bring many interests and skill levels to the classroom and I am constantly trying to innovate to make sure all learning needs are being met.
My school is located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, and we are a public, unscreened school.
This means we do not discriminate or screen based on prior test scores or GPAs. My students are incredibly energetic, passionate, and full of curiosity. I feel honored to get to work with them each day!
My Project
This novel takes place in Zimbabwe for the first half of the novel and then transitions with the protagonist to America, where she experiences the challenges and wonders of the United States.The novel "We Need New Names" by Novilet Bulawayo is a life changing book.
I have taught this novel before and have found that it opens students' eyes to new places and people they have never before known.
The book chronicles what it is like to live in Africa in a time of turmoil and unrest.
As the protagonist feels fear, so do the students. As the students root for the protagonist to succeed, it helps them to understand that we are all human beings, and there is more that we share in common than what makes us different.
I believe this novel will propel my students' reading skills while making them more informed and more empathetic citizens of the world.
