This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Gushing to your friends about your favorite books is easier when your friends have read those books, too!
I met my new crop of students last year.
They are inquisitive, they are full of energy, and they love books! Readers need new titles to start the year with, and many of my classroom titles will be familiar to this year's kids.
I've found that seventh graders tend to like books that have characters who are like them or the people they know - not necessarily similar in their situations, but similar in their responses to conflicts and other characters. My new classes will be excited to find characters to empathize with in fresh titles!
My Project
These pairs of books I have requested will allow students to get into reading partnerships immediately, while helping me reinforce the very social aspect of reading. Kids can explore series stories together, and then recommend books to those partnerships who need new titles. Book selection would be managed between readers, and students could have some real agency in their reading lives.
For some of our students, their reading lives exist mostly in the classroom.
When those students come to see that there is joy in reading with others, in sharing stories and ideas, and in feeling close to characters, they may go ahead and look for that joy outside of school. I want all of my students to become the kind of people for whom reading for pleasure is a lifestyle.
