Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
VHHS is an urban school in Los Angeles serving 1400 students through our comprehensive program and our VAPA and STEM-Multimedia Magnets. A Title I school, almost 75% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunches. Our students come from diverse backgrounds and have diverse talents and learning styles. About 70% of our students are classified as Long Term English Language Learners, thus many struggle to keep up with today's complex literacy demands. Additionally, we serve about 100 students with Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs) and about 100 students classified as Gifted And Talented (GATE).
Advanced literacy skill are essential for students to meet their college and career goals.
One of the surest ways to increase literacy is independent reading. Due to the economic and geographic barriers, many students to not have access to books outside of our school, resulting in difficulties in keeping up with 21st century literacy standards.
My Project
Students improve their literacy skills through independent reading. When reading independently, students want to read the latest young adult fiction.
By reading independently, students strengthen literacy skills they will use in other classes and in life.
Independent reading also helps build a lifetime habit of reading. Moreover, reading fiction has been shown to help develop empathy and critical thinking skills so that our students may go out into the world as well-rounded, compassionate, and literate citizens.
It is the library's duty to provide relevant and current books for students' independent reading needs. However, since the state and district do not provide funds for library collection development, the schools must find money in their allotted budget. This year the library was allocated only $458, which I have already spent on books to support curriculum, to replace popular books that are worn or lost, and to diversify our graphic novel collection.
This campaign contains books that have been rated as top YA novels by sources such as Kirkus Review, We Need Diverse Books, YALSA, and Goodreads. It was also compiled based on requests from students.
