My Students
I am a teacher/librarian at an elementary school that services many Navy and Army families in Hawaii.
The library is the center of encouraging literacy on our Preschool-6th grade campus.
About half of the students at my school are military dependents who move locations every three years. My students come to the library twice a month for library visits where they borrow books for academic and recreational purposes.
My Project
Jim Rohn stated, "The difference between where you are today and where you'll be five years from now will be found in the quality of books you've read." I'd like to purchase excellent children's fiction books for my upper elementary students. Due to the recent COVID-19 economic downturn, my school's budget is very limited and I won't be able to purchase new books for next school year. In Hawaii, librarians annually recommend high quality literature on the Nene Award Nominee List. This project asks for books from the Nominee List for the 2020-21 school year.
Every year, my students in grades 4-6 vote for the Hawaii Nene Award, the fiction book award chosen by students across the state.
I'll like to encourage my students to read books from the Nene Award Nominee List by adding them to my library. Students will read as many of the books as they can and make informed decisions when they vote for title they believe should win the award. Students who read these books will also be invited to monthly book club meetings featuring books from the list.
