Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are very special first graders in a high needs area of a borough in New York. Each student is unique in his or her own way and deserves to have the best educational experience possible. Most of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch and come to school every day eager to learn.
Unfortunately, my classroom does not always have the supplies we need.
Every donation makes a difference in my students' lives. I look forward to creating projects that will make our classroom a joyful learning environment. Thank you!
My Project
Remember all those hours you spent learning how to add and subtract? Maybe, your parents helped you. Many of my students do not have anyone at home that works with them. They have little support and therefore they need repeated practice at school. We practice these basic facts, and much more, using hands on manipulatives.
Manipulatives can be important tools in helping students to think and reason in more meaningful ways.
They help with verbalizing mathematical thinking, relating real-world situations to mathematical symbolism, working collaboratively, and gaining confidence in their abilities to find solutions to mathematical problems.
These base ten blocks and unifix cubes are the math resources needed to create hands-on activities for my students. These resources will provide my students an understanding of how numbers are strategically placed in value. By counting and placing cubes and ten sticks in groups, this will allow students to visualize how numbers are composed and decomposed. My students will also have a chance to add and subtract numbers using base ten blocks and the unifix cubes. They will be able to take apart the cubes when learning to subtract and group cubes together when learning to add. By visually seeing their addition and subtraction problems, these manipulatives will help my students understand more about math and learning will be fun! As they progress in using these resources, my students' understanding of math will be easier and they will be able to independently count and group objects with the help of these base ten blocks and unifix cubes.
Donating to this project will give my students an opportunity to engage in math instruction that is individualized, engaging, active, and promotes higher level thinking skills.
