My second graders are voracious readers! They love to read both fiction and non-fiction books. Their favorite characters include Pete the Cat, Fly Guy, Piggie and Elephant, and Mercy Watson. They also love to read about insects, space, and plants. My students are hungry bookworms! They are eager to learn and read about the world around them.
My students love to be at school and are like little sponges absorbing everything around them.
Their parents work long hours and usually do not see their children. The children are usually cared for by their grandparents or a family friend. Most of them do not have someone who speaks English at home. Thus, it is difficult for students to acquire language.
Due to financial hardships, my students do not have the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities during the school year or summer.
My Project
Everyday for reading workshop, my students choose just right books from the library to read independently. With these books, students are working on reading strategies, retell, and comprehension. After reading independently, students confer with their peers to have book discussions about characters, wonderings, and questions they have. The reading levels in my classroom span over a wide range.
Therefore, it is important to have just right books across ten levels in the classroom library for my diverse readers to choose from.
The leveled readers from Rigby publishing continue the characters from previous levels with new stories in the higher levels. This provides support for students as they attempt to read the next level. The rich vocabulary in the leveled books also continue to build from previous levels. Both the fiction and nonfiction books offer a variety of topics to engage students.
Due to budget cuts in school funding, it has been challenging to have quality just right books in my classroom. Your donations to this project will challenge my students to become better readers!
