I teach high school English to some of the best teenagers in this city and everyday is an adventure! Each year I teach, my classroom becomes more lively and exciting.
My students come from predominately low income households from all five boroughs of the city.
They apply to get into this school by demonstrating a strong work ethic, good grades and good attendance. The school specializes in Math and Science and our students go on to great schools in the CUNY, SUNY, and private systems. Overall, they are wonderful young people who really love to learn and want to be successful.
My Project
I am requesting a class set of Jay Heinrichs's book Thank You For Arguing, Revised and Updated Edition: What Aristotle, Lincoln, And Homer Simpson Can Teach Us About the Art of Persuasion. I teach the 11th Grade Advanced Placement English Language and Composition Course, and I read this book over the summer to prepare for the class. I found the information so helpful and would love for my students to have the opportunity to read the entire book or at least the most important sections. The A.P. Language exam is really focused on writing, argument, and persuasion and the author does a wonderful job conveying how we use persuasion in our everyday lives. With the book, I hope to assign the students chapters, and they can then lead the class discussion for the day their assigned chapter is due.
The A.P.
exam is very difficult, but students who score well are eligible to receive college credit. For students whose families struggle financially, this opportunity can be really beneficial, both emotionally and financially. When students are excited about reading and writing, I do everything in my power to capitalize on the opportunity to nourish that excitement. A.P. exams expect students to know and understand college level material, and this book will help the write more effectively.
