We Need Equipment to Play Music!

My students need speakers for the iPod so that we can listen to music and 5 metronomes for music practice.

Wouldn't it be neat to be able to play an instrument to the same music as your favorite music? I teach at a high school where our goal is to get more students to go on to post-high school education. While many of our students do choose to go on to college, many do not. We have students who come in from the reservation on buses 90 minutes one way to attend. Others can't afford basic school supplies. One constant, however, is that they love music and want to learn more.

Currently, we do not have a speaker system for my classroom so that students can listen to music. This makes it difficult to teach them what they need to do. Moreover, we do not have any metronomes to help students keep beat to the music that they are playing.

A speaker system would allow us to play downloaded music and digital recordings in class. In addition, metronomes are crucial to helping students learn how to play an instrument. Combined, students would be able to learn music more easily than they do now. Moreover, research shows that students who are engaged in instrumental music classes perform better on standardized tests than their non-instrumental peers (Johnson and Memmott, 2006 "Examination of Relationships Between Participation in School Music Programs of Differing Quality and Standardized Test Results." Journal of Research in Music Education). These findings suggest that a quality music program could help students in other areas as well, including encouraging students to continue their education.

Your donation will help my students learn music and continue to be motivated students. By encouraging their study of music with quality resources, many will be encouraged to continue their education in other ways and it will help in creating well-rounded graduates. So many of our students do not study art because of our emphasis on math and science, it is time that we helped to expand their horizons.
