We Need Empathy....We Need Diversity...We need Diverse Books.

Help me give my students diverse books that teach empathy. By including characters from diverse racial, socio-economic, and other backgrounds, books can become more truly representatives of the fabric of life in this big, messy, crazy word of ours

My Students

The school I work at is a diverse community, culturally, economically and linguistically. There is over 55% minority from all over the world, speaking over 36 languages. We are a Title I school with high numbers or percentages of children from low-income families. I work specifically with students with a variety of academic, emotional, and behavioral needs.

My students are hardworking, inquisitive and creative.

They are eager to learn and very motivated with goals that we set to better their academic and social skills. Each day I strive to create lessons that are effective, fun, and interesting for my very diverse students. The kids are passionate and very much willing to learn, given all the support and needs.

My Project

This project aims to expose my students to diverse books that talk about self- empowerment and cultural diversities. Learning about different stories can help you understand what it’s like for people who don’t share your race, religion, sexual orientation, or socio-economic status. Diverse books teach empathy. By including characters from diverse racial, sexual, and other backgrounds, books can become more truly representative of the fabric of life in this big, messy, crazy word of ours – and therefore they can help us learn more about ourselves and others.

Additionally, young children easily absorb things.

Think of how quickly they learn words and how much they mimic what they see around them. If you include diversity from the start, it will instill those ideas and form a sense of acceptance and understanding in children.

The materials that I am asking for are books that focus on diversity, self-empowerment, self-discovery to name a few.
