Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As 15- and 16-year-olds, the sophomores in my English classes are discovering who they truly are and asserting themselves.

That's why they so readily engage with the themes that we focus on sophomore year: when and how an individual should stand up to society and the development of personal identity.

These themes connect perfectly to their lived experiences, and many of my students work towards a better future for the planet and start to make choices that help them build the future they want for themselves.

My Project

At my high school, our students are 54% Latinx. Our sophomore regular English curriculum is 100% written by white male authors. We have been wanting to diversify our sophomore book list for a while. This year, we received a grant that allows us to pilot "Fruit of the Drunken Tree" by Ingrid Rojas Contreras, a powerful book by a Colombian author about strong Latina women. I am lucky enough to be the teacher chosen to teach it! The grant will pay for one class set of the novel. However, I teach two classes of sophomores, and I want to be able to double the number of students who can experience this amazing novel.

These books will help our students see themselves in the books we read and recognize that their stories are worth telling, too.

With two full class sets, we will have enough copies of the book so that, if the pilot is successful, all the sophomore English teachers can add it to their book lists for next year. That way, all the sophomores at my school can read this story about free will and self-determination, the power of family, and the crushing effects of poverty, war, and crime.
