Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have the pleasure of working with students in the Gifted, Arts, and Technology magnet in Los Angeles (Silver Lake / Los Feliz area).

My students are highly-engaged; they are risk-takers who enjoy exploring new perspectives to gain a deeper understanding of themselves and society.

They engage in innovative learning experiences, developing their intellect, creativity, curiosity, and compassion in order to contribute meaningfully to their own lives, their community, and the world.

My students are culturally and ethnically diverse learners from different socioeconomic backgrounds. We are a Title I school located in an urban setting.

My Project

I want to revamp the literature we study and focus on narratives that are reflective of the lives and values of my students. Students from diverse and often marginalized communities need to see themselves in the books we value in school. These books will help validate their upbringing. Additionally, these stories will serve as an exploration of themselves (students will dive deeper into their culture) and others (students will uncover different perspectives and discover shared commonalities). The year will focus on the voices and choices of young people. I would like a class set of The Storm Runner by J.C. Cervantes to serve as an opportunity to dive into Mayan mythology.
