My Project

Children start developing their biases and understandings of differences between race, gender, and social status at a young age. Many of these biases may stem from biases they were exposed to in their upbringing, but they can also develop through the under-representation or representation of differences. The difference between the two is massive. When children experience under-representation and underexposure, they risk developing biases that may be exclusive and oppressive. With representation and celebration of differences, specifically through literature, teachers and students together combat these struggles one word at a time. As educators, the materials that we provide to our students serve as a bridge between our students and their understanding of the world and the different people inside of it. If we provide our students with literature that is representative of groups of people that do not normally receive representation, we are being proactive in creating an inclusive and welcoming environment where all backgrounds, stories, and struggles are heard and appreciated. Many students go a lifetime without reading or seeing stories that they relate to in their libraries. Accurate and fair representation means representing everyone. Muslim children, Chinese American families, African American stories, LGBTQIA+ experiences, Native American beliefs, and so much more! The collection of books that I have gathered in this project is a small chunk of the effort to be inclusive that our schools could work towards. My list includes a variety of cultural stories, by a diverse set of authors. By implementing a diverse range of titles, authors from different backgrounds, and colorful story lines into our libraries, we as educators are ensuring that every student will find a piece of themselves within the binds of a book.
