Help me give my students the tools to start the conversation around race and diversity. I need books that they can see themselves in, so that can feel empowered and challenge one another.

My Students
Hello everyone, I am a 5th grade teacher at STEAM School. I teach a diverse group students in a low income area of Los Angeles.
Distance Learning has been such a roller coaster.
It took the students weeks before they all had reliable technology and WIFI. Now my students are online and happy to be back with our class. They however miss the school library and and want to be able to check out good books to take home. I hope to bridge this gap.
My Project
Distance Learning has been stressful on everyone, especially the students. A good book can escape from the stressful time we are in now and is one of the non tech learning strategies that can be utilized during this time. As a teacher in Los Angeles many of my students don't have access to a lot of books. I need a larger library to send home meaningful books to my students to close this reading gap. Diverse books in particular will allow my students to connect to text and will make reading a more personal experience. Thank you for the support!
