My Students
"Hey! She's like me!" These words were exclaimed by a student in my class last year as she listened to a story about a blended family. Bright, inquisitive, and curious would-be some adjectives to describe the children I work with. They are talented students working hard everyday to succeed. The majority of students in my school come from minority backgrounds and many are English language learners.
All-day long, we explore books, numbers, and ideas.
It is my job as a teacher to facilitate the exploration of new ideas, topics my students care about, and what it means to be a citizen of the world.
The students in my class are an increasingly diverse group of children who have a wide range of needs and experiences. My school is a Title I school and serves students PreK through fourth grade. My goal is for my students to love reading, and make improvements in reading each day. Linking literacy and personal connections to books will help us achieve this goal! The students in my class and school receive free/reduced lunch, have special needs, and love to listen to stories!
My Project
Connecting with the characters and stories in books opens the world to children. When children can relate to the characters, settings, and events in a book, they better relate and understand story elements. They see themselves inside of the book and want to read it over and over again! Unfortunately, a large percentage of students are unable to make these connections due to the lack of access to multicultural books. Furthermore, part of my role as a teacher is to encourage a community of inclusion and to celebrate diversity. In order to do this, I must be reading books written by and about people of color, differently-abled people, as well as peacemakers from around the world.
The books I have chosen showcase a variety of characters and circumstances to help my students gain more perspective, empathy, and of course, a greater love of reading!
I have carefully selected these books to meet my goal of promoting tolerance and character among my students. Developing a love of reading is one of the greatest gifts I could give my students. Most of my students have few, if any, books at home, so getting books into their hands at school is extra important.
My kiddos and I would truly appreciate your help as we navigate this wonderfully changing and diverse world together. We thank you.
