My Students
Our tiny, rural, Title I school is located in Central New York. My students come from a very tight-knit community, in which most of the families have lived for generations. Despite our small size, we have a diverse population and students come from all different backgrounds and experiences.
It is so important to me to be able to create a classroom that encourages not only a love of literacy in my first grade students, but also a classroom in which they can see themselves represented in our literature!
I am a career changer who is very excited to be embarking on my very first year of teaching! I appreciate your consideration in supporting my students and our classroom. Thank you so much!
My Project
I teach in a district with a large Native population. Native American children's books and authors can difficult to find, and they are severely lacking in many classroom libraries. Out of all the children's books published in 2018, more than 50% contained white characters. Less than 1% contained Native American characters. I carefully selected several books from recommended lists on the AICL (American Indians in Children's Literature) site, which "provides critical perspectives and analysis of indigenous peoples in children's and young adult books, the school curriculum, popular culture, and society."
All students deserve to see themselves represented in the literature that they read.
Books have the power to encourage students who are not frequently represented, as well as to expose students to lives and cultures different than their own. Inclusive books are also a powerful way to foster empathy in children.
In addition to the Native American selection, I have chosen several other books with diverse representations of characters and familiar stories. My aim is to provide a classroom library that reflects and honors the lives of all young people. This project will provide my students with literature that helps to promote representation of themselves, their culture, history, and communities. I appreciate your support in providing my students with a diverse and well rounded classroom library!
