My Students

A new classroom, a new school, AND a new country?! This is the reality for many of the students in my classroom. Most of them are English-language learners recently arriving to the United States. Students vary in background and socio-economic status.

I strive to make them feel comfortable and safe; after all, this is our home.

My students make our class feel more like a family. They know the importance of education and are grateful for their opportunity to learn and go to school.

My Project

My fifth grade classroom is used by sixty students daily for English Language Arts instruction. I am striving to foster a love of reading in all of my students. Most students in my class are first generation and speak multiple languages. Representation is so important in our classroom for students to see themselves and their experiences reflected in what we learn and discuss each day. Our classroom library is a compilation of old books left behind by previous teachers, and a few new ones I purchased. It is seriously lacking the amount of chapter books and diversity needed to support our classroom!

We are hoping to increase our classroom library with books focused around individuals as unique as the students in our class!

The books requested, like “Dear Martin” and “Salam Alaikum: A Message of Peace” will be used in our reading lessons, class read alouds, and for students' silent reading. The books requested feature characters from all over the world, with a variety of life experiences. By having these specific books donated to our class, students will develop a love of reading and a better understanding of the diverse cultures in the world around them.
