Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from all over Los Angeles. Some come from broken families. Others come from loving and involved parents. The students have built a community in my classroom where friendship and trust is built and learned. Some students get on a bus early in the morning to come to our wonderful school. When they leave it takes some two hours on a bus back to their homes. Most students do their homework on the bus and I (their teacher) am the only consistent thing in their lives.
My school is a Title I school and everyone gets breakfast in the morning, some students receive free lunches too.
It's a great place to work and all the kids want to learn while also having fun. My students in particular love outside projects and learning through experiences. Our school loves science and so do my students. We love conducting our own experiments outside in the fresh air.
What makes my students special is that they choose to come to our special school to learn and enrich their lives. Everyday, each student has a smile on his or her face and that brightens up my day.
My Project
I am requesting these growth mindfulness and diverse books because I teach third grade and I want my students to understand that all students have similar problems and that they need to find a solution to be happy and healthy inside and outside of school. Students love examples and visuals, and with these books, I can provide students with illustrated examples of finding peace, being kind, and becoming a leader.
I picked these books because they will inspire my students to heal and help rather then break or bully.
I think that because these books are diverse, more and more students will understand other people's perspective and grow from those experiences. I think that these books along with Restorative Justice in the classroom will help my students become stronger and empowered human beings who will grow up to be kind. With these books, it might just change a whole group of students for the better.
