My Students

Our students matter. Our students are readers and explorers. Their excitement to read engaging books is clear. They also love to make and create. Our students are artists. They are very active. We want to give our students opportunities to authentically share their learning. Our student population is diverse. Our population breakdown is 26.7% African American, 26.3% Hispanic/Latino, 30.8% White, and 11.5% two or more races. 63.4% of our students are economically disadvantaged. 12.4% of our students have disabilities. 26.1% of our students have limited English proficiency. Students in kindergarten and first grade learn half their day in English and half of their day in Spanish.

Our students are very active, intelligent, creative, and determined.

Each year, we will add another grade of dual language immersion (DLI) classes until there is at least one section of DLI within each grade level. Finally, we are a nationally recognized Welcoming School, and we intentionally teach ally behavior especially by supporting the LGBT community and individuals.

My Project

Understandably I have come to DonorsChoose in the past to request diverse books for our library.  In the past, I have seen first hand the representation and empowerment these books bring to the students. This list is no different.  Please support the mission to bring books to students that they want to read and will help them see their potential. Reading is fundamental, but can be discouraging if our shelves are full of mainly white characters and people. The work must continue.

It is now more than ever crucial to support creating collections based on the work of Black writers and illustrators.

For too long our library shelves represented only the dominant culture and thus required assimilation  in their pages.  Anti-assimilation is anti-racism. It is our duty to give students books that represent their stories, families, and lives.  When you give to this project, you give to our students.  Our students matter and they deserve excellent and fun books that speak to their experience.  Diverse books also support white students with empathy, understanding, and perspective taking.  Understanding that the dominant culture is currently based on whiteness, but that doesn't mean that we cannot strive for diversity.  Together we can work on changing perspectives for our young people one book at a time.
