My students need diverse books in which they are able to see themselves, dream for their futures, and become activists for change in the world.

My Students
Step into my classroom and you will find a diverse group of students, engaged in their own way, at their own pace and ability at the task at hand. You may see two or three sets of students clustered around the paraprofessionals, chatting and completing their math work. You may see students working independently or in pairs in the library nook on the floor, spread out and lying down. You may see two or three students working with me on the Smartboard. We are engaged and we are flexible.
I am a teacher of students with disabilities in a low-income/high poverty district.
My students come from immigrant families, foster families, and a variety of family structures. I work to give them positive reinforcement and as much love as they need. I cannot control what goes on outside of my classroom, but my classroom is a space where they can be who they need to be and learn how they need to learn.
My Project
It is my goal to be an inclusive and anti-racist educator and to create a classroom that is an inclusive space. In order to effectively be inclusive, we have to learn from other points of view and practice listening.
“Students need not necessarily agree with other viewpoints, but should come to understand how they could make sense from the point of view of those who hold them." C.
E. Sleeter
I have searched for a diverse range of books which will provide my students with both a mirror in which to see and understand themselves. Representation matters and I want all my students to feel how much they matter. I have also requested books which will give my students a window into other cultures, people, languages, and experiences. I hope they will use these books to better understand the world and decide how they wish to improve or change it.
