My Students

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." -- Nelson Mandela.

A typical day in my classroom can be challenging when my students lack basic needs such as pencils and sharpeners.

I would like to provide my students with the materials that they need to be successful.

My school is a Title I-funded school with nearly 100% of our students receiving free breakfast and lunch. My students live in an inner-city area where basic needs are difficult to meet, and, therefore, they cannot solely focus on learning to the best of their ability. My students need so much, but they are so very creative with what they have!

Although they might not come in with a lot of background knowledge, my students have a love of learning and learn best when they are presented with material in multiple ways. I feel that it is important to give them access to different resources and activities to help to meet their individual needs. Many of my students have challenges such as learning disabilities or emotional difficulties, and they may be English Language Learners because they are new to the country.

My Project

I teach a very energetic group of 5th graders. Over half of them are English Language Learners, but when it comes to learning coding, they are out-pacing my 6-8th graders! Even though I teach Digital Literacy, I believe they would really enjoy graphic novels that could help them learn to read in English. I would like to take advantage of this energy and enthusiasm and offer them books with more graphics than words to encourage them to read the entire book.

Graphic novels can help to open the door to learning in a way that engages reluctant readers.

I would like for my students to be able to take these books home to add to their home libraries (or start a home library) and to share with their families. Some of these novels are even in Spanish, which is so amazing for my Spanish speakers!
