This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students love learning how to use compasses. We practice drawing circles, measuring them, and making designs with circles. Unfortunately, our class set of compasses are not very sturdy, and very few of them work anymore.
My students attend school in an urban, inner-city neighborhood, with all the problems and challenges that typically face inner-city communities.
Poverty is high and literacy rates are low among their families. Despite these challenges, many of them love coming to school and learning each day.
We strive to create joyful learners at our school, and few subjects create more interest than our geometry unit in Mathematics. Students particularly love learning how to use compasses. They ask me if they can practice with them at recess and in their spare time.
Because they are cheap and not well-made, however, the majority of our compasses have broken. The tips have broken off and the arms are loose, making drawing an exact circle impossible. Compasses are not school tools that are easy to share. In order to learn to use them properly, all students need lots of practice with their own. Most parents at our school are not able to provide these for their children.
My Project
I want to purchase a class set of very sturdy compasses for my classroom that students will enjoy using for years to come. We are tired of sharing broken-down compasses, and long to have one for each student to practice with. The more they are able to practice, the more proficient the children will become at using them, and the more both their enthusiasm for Math and their understanding of geometry will grow. And a large one for the teacher to model with would be very helpful too.
Every student, no matter her or his economic status, deserves a quality education and to have access to Math tools that work and are easy to use.
Having quality compasses to use in the classroom not only will help them with Math fundamentals, but might also have the added benefit of helping them feel that they deserve it.
