Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Calorimetry is a unit of study common to math/algebra based sciences: AP Chemistry, Chemistry, and Physics. How many calories are in that chocolate candy piece? What combination of chemicals can produce the coldest ice pack? Calorimetry shows students practical and measurable applications of science.

Our urban public high school is as diverse racially, culturally, and economically as our large metropolitan city.

Our student population is majority Hispanic (70%), followed by Asian, White, Black, Pacific Islander, and various other groups. Almost all my students classify in our state's lowest economic category, which qualifies them for financial assistance such as reduced lunch and free tutoring programs. For nearly 50% of my students, the primary language that their family speaks at home is not English. Many of our students were classified as ESL students (English as a Second Language), when they began high school, but have now been reclassified as English Proficient. Due to funding cuts, science classes at our public high school have recently increased to average sizes of 47 students per class. We are not a private school, so in order to give these young students an updated, college prep lab experience, our science lab programs truly survive from donations and grants.

My Project

In the past, we have constructed simple calorimeters using two styrofoam coffee cups. While this will produce pretty good results, it would be beneficial for students to use real calorimeters. Similar to a thermos, a calorimeter is a device that isolates the temperature inside from the outside environment. If two chemical substances change in temperature when they are mixed, students can use the calorimeter to measure the amount of heat produced. Did you know that different metals heat and cool at different rates? With the sets I am requesting, Chemistry and Physics students will be given unknown metal pieces (e.g. copper, aluminum, or zinc) to heat up. Then, by placing the metal pieces in a calorimeter filled with water, the students can measure, calculate, and determine the identity of the unknown metal. In advanced labs, AP Chemistry students can mix two chemicals (like those in a chemical ice pack) and determine the enthalpy (heat of reaction) as required in college courses.

To keep our science lab maintained, I must rely on donations or grants.

We currently have only paper cup calorimeters and are in need of the safety glasses required for students. With your donations, students will be pleasantly surprised. The calorimeters and glasses total only about $20 for each lab group, but even these low priced improvements have a positive impact on student interest. As students see lab improvements, they are encouraged to meet the challenges of our course more seriously.
