Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a Title I school in South Carolina. One hundred percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Around 40% of our students come from non-English speaking homes, which puts them at a disadvantage when learning to read and write. Most of our students' families also lack the resources to provide books and other educational supplies for their children to use at home.
Despite their economic disadvantages, my students are eager to learn how to read and write.
They love experiencing new texts that they can read at school and take home to share with their families. My students enjoy reading, and I want to ensure that they will continue to read and learn throughout their lives.
My Project
It is always hard to work on an empty stomach. You are constantly thinking about when lunch is or if you will be able to get a snack that day. Imagine having those thoughts as a 6 or 7 year old.
This project will ensure that my students have a snack each day and breakfast for those students who did not eat anything before coming to school.
The Pop-Tarts, crackers, cereal, granola bars, fruit snacks, and cookies will be given to students who miss breakfast because the bell rang before they arrived, or there was not food for them at home. This project will provide snacks for my students to help them focus on learning how to read, write, add, subtract, and all of the other foundational skills that first graders learn. Please consider helping me feed my students so they can learn and grow!
